Why Modulate exists
Built by one person tired of loud tabs.
FEY, the developer behind Modulate, spent a lot of time in back-to-back online meetings. The multi-tab kind, five or six windows open, every one of them fighting for the same speaker. A notification here, a video that wouldn't stay muted there, one tab louder than the meeting itself.
The fix seemed obvious: control each tab's volume on its own. A few open-source attempts already existed, and none of them held up. Abandoned, flaky, missing something basic. So the decision was to just build it, not as a side project to shelve, but as something meant for anyone fighting their own browser for a moment of quiet. Free, and built to actually work.
Fun fact
This idea didn't start with work meetings. It started way earlier, in college lecture halls. Sitting through class on Google Meet, turning the professor's voice down just low enough to sneak in a video in the next tab over. Some days it wasn't one extra tab, it was three. Modulate is basically the tool that student always wished existed.
How it got here
The name
Before
"Volume Control" in the extension, "Volume Controller" on marketing assets.
The naming was already inconsistent, and its icon was a dark, glossy 3D orb. One name, one bold mark.
The interface

A dark icon that clashed with its own light, airy popup.
A mark that actually matches the frosted glass it sits on top of.
